If you have decided to obtain a short pole or whip for close range fishing for small fish as covered earlier, you can use small insert wagglers, but because of the close range at which you will be fishing you can also use specialist pole floats that are designed to be attached to the line at both the top and the bottom.

In appearance these resemble the ‘Avon floats’ described for river fishing, but in miniature, and have very sensitive tips made or bristle or cane.

A few of these will be useful and the ones you want will be about 4 to 5 inches in length (10 to 12 centimetres) with a body near the top of the float about .5 to .75 inches (12mm to 19 mm) in length and about .25 to .5 inches (6mm to 12mm) in width.
