Latin name: Perca fluviatilis
The Perch is a very distinctive fish with a large spiked Dorsal fin and striped markings.
Populations of Perch exist in most British waters. Small Perch live in shoals, whilst the largest specimens tend to be solitary.
Perch are bold voracious fish, and a small Perch is often the first fish caught by young Anglers as they are not tackle shy and bite boldly.
Baits
Small perch will take Maggots and Worms, the larger fish being caught on small fish baits, large worms and artificial spinning baits.
Tactics
Small Perch can be taken on most float fishing and legering methods where they will often make up part of a mixed bag.
Where large Perch are known to be present they can be caught using small artificial spinners.
Legering with large worms such as Lobs and Dendrobaenas is a also a good technique that can account for some quite sizable Perch.
