gudgeonLatin name: Gobio gobio

Gudgeon are a small fish that resemble small Barbel. They are present in a wide variety of waters.

Some canals have very large populations of Gudgeon, but the larger specimens are to be found in rivers where they are often caught by anglers targeting other species such as Roach and Dace.

Gudgeon feed freely and boldly, often pulling the float several inches below the surface. They are most likely to be caught down in the water, on or near the bed of the river or canal.

Baits
Maggots, especially Pinkies are a good bait for Gudgeon.

Tactics
Fishing close in with a small whip on canals is an effective method for catching gudgeon.

Small amounts of loose feed and groundbait should be fed regularly to keep the Gudgeon in the swim and feeding.

It often pays to feed two or three different lines, and switch to another when bites slow on one line. Continue feeding all lines, and over the course of a session you can catch a large number of Gudgeon.
