graylingLatin name Thymallus thymallus

The Grayling known as 'The lady of the stream' is a silver coloured fish with a large sail shaped dorsal fin and an additional adipose fin near the tail that is also found in game fish such as Trout.

The Grayling will generally be found in the faster parts of rivers.

Baits

Grayling where present in reasonable numbers can be taken on maggots in a mixed bag of Dace and Roach, but are more often fished for by game anglers using artificial flies.

Tactics

Float fishing with maggots is a good method for catching Grayling, but they will also take legered baits.

Fly fishing is also a popular method for catching Grayling and they will take both dry (floating) and wet (sinking) flies. There are a number of fly patterns developed especially for Grayling fishing, but they will also take flies intended for Trout.

As Grayling spawn at the same time as Coarse fish, they are popular with Game Anglers as they allow fly fishing methods to be used when Trout are not in season.
