Latin name: Anguilla anguilla
Although technically the Eel is not a fish, it is often caught by Anglers and is included in the licence for Coarse fish.
Unmistakeable because of its snake-like appearance, the Eel is widely distributed throughout British waters, but is most likely to be encountered in number in rivers and drains.
Eels can grow very large, the larger specimens occasionally being caught by Pike Anglers fishing with dead baits.
Baits
Eels will take most live baits used by Anglers such as Maggots and Worms. Larger specimens will take dead baits of whole or sectioned coarse and sea fish.
Tactics
Large Eels are usually fished for on leger tackle using deadbaits or bunches of large worms.
