daceLatin name: Leuciscus leuciscus

Dace are slim silver fish that are very similar in appearance to small Chub.

Dace do not grow very large, and one of near to 1lb would be a very good specimen. What they lack in size, they make up in numbers and large shoals of them can often be seen on or near the surface of rivers in the summer months.

The Dace is widely distributed, but prefers fast flowing water so is mostly found in rivers although there are small populations of Dace in some still waters.

Baits
Dace are generally fished for with using small baits such as maggots and small pieces of bread but larger specimens can be caught using bread flak, paste and worms.

Tactics
Light float fishing methods on rivers will account for Dace where they will often be caught as part of a mixed bag with Roach.

Being primarily 'up in the water' feeders, a lightly shotted rig that allows the bait to fall slowly through the swim will usually work best, but a light swimfeeder rig fished in conjunction with a very sensitive quivertip can work on days when the fish are feeding on the bottom.

You will need quick reactions when Dace fishing as they can eject the bait very quickly and a fast strike is required.
