Latin name: Silurus glanis
The European Catfish, also knows as the Danubian Catfish and Wels is a powerful fish with a large mouth flanked by 6 barbels.
Capable of growing to a large size, the Catfish is found in only a few waters in the UK where it has been stocked in lakes, ponds and canals.
A solitary fish, Catfish are is seldom seen by Anglers unless they catch one.
Where Catfish are known to be stocked, they are more likely to be caught during the night than in daytime.
Baits
Catfish will take most baits intended for Carp and Pike.
Favourite baits are deadbaits, shrimp and squid. Fishmeal boilies have also been known to catch Catfish.
Tactics
Baits presented either on float or leger tackle will take Catfish, but the size and power of these fish dictates that the tackle must be strong.
