A wide variety of items can be used to catch fish and attract them into your swim. Some of these are specialist items that you can buy at fishing tackle shops, but there are also many household food items that can be used either as they are, or to make good fishing baits.
Hook baits are just that, baits to go on the hook, but in most fishing situations you will throw some in to attract fish to your swim and encourage them to feed.
Groundbaits are used to lay down an attractive false bottom in your swim. Fish will be attracted by the scents and activity created by groundbait.
Flavourings can be used both with hook baits and groundbaits to increase their attractiveness.
